There’s nothing better than a relaxing coffee, people watching or catching up with good friends. We are so lucky in Falmouth to have many lovely places to sit with a cuppa and watch the world go by. We’ve rounded up seven of our favourites for a post-shopping pit stop or a morning mocha.
Espressini
Situated on Killigrew Street, Espressini is the perfect place for people watching. We love to get the window seat, or better still, to sit outside now that the weather is getting a little better. From the beautiful bright pink front to the friendly owner Rupert and his team of talented baristas, you’ll be hard pushed to get a better oat milk flat white in Falmouth. We’ve also just discovered their cocktail nights – make ours an Espresso Martini please!
Best place to… people watch
Above the Bookshop Café
The brand new Above the Bookshop Café is pretty special. We are all book lovers at Heather & Lay and love nothing more than browsing the latest releases in Falmouth Bookseller. So, when Falmouth Bookseller announced that they were taking over Dolly’s (we adored Dolly’s) we couldn’t think of anybody better. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of a bookish hang-out? Part café, part library, you’ll find tables scattered with local books as well as a dedicated co-working space with 8 desks to hire named after writers, that can be rented daily, weekly or monthly. We are tempted to co-work from here even though our office is a few doors down!
Best place to… enjoy a chapter of a novel
Gylly Beach Café
We couldn’t write about the best cafes in Falmouth without mentioning Gylly. With the best position in Falmouth, everyone in the office jumps at the opportunity to do the take-on tour for properties on the seafront as we know we can grab a cheeky cappuccino from Gylly with a slice of the most magnificent view. We spend a lot of time looking out at Gyllyngvase Beach as we sell so much in the area on Fenwick Road, Spernen Wyn Road and of course, luxury apartments The Liner. But there’s something about being able to enjoy a flat white and a Full Cornish breakfast next to the water that never gets old.
Best place to… eat cake by the ocean
Uppe at The Poly
We are so proud this year to be corporate sponsors of The Poly and we love their café. Situated upstairs, Uppe is close to the hustle and bustle of the town yet quietly removed. Originally known as Solskinn, team members Felix and Kerrie have taken over. One of them the original day time barista and the other the night time bar tender, they decided to bring their bar and barista experience together to create a dedicated space where customers can get the best of both worlds.
Friendly, relaxed and laid back, here you’ll find a high-class product but no dress code – even furry friends are welcome. All of their food and drink is local, and they are the first wholesalers of Rave Coffee in Cornwall. Not only will you discover a smooth coffee experience, but even the decaf option is brilliant – really rich and it holds its flavour – every detail has been considered. Our favourite seat is in the window, watching the world go by below. Delicious cakes and high ceilings, Uppe has a contemporary feel and an artisan approach, the coffee also takes it Uppe a level!
Best place to… catch a show or an exhibition post Cappuccino.
Ragamuffins
Almost directly opposite Heather & Lay, you’ll find Ragamuffins. Fronted by Zoe, here you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome and a delicious coffee. The Ragamuffins ethos gives us hope for humanity. It’s about friendliness and good old-fashioned hospitality. The team at Ragamuffins always have time to stop and talk, you are greeted with a smile no matter how busy they are. The incredible coffee which is roasted in Cornwall is all served under £3 making their coffee not only delicious but affordable. Find out more about Ragmuffins in our blog post where we interviewed Zoe.
Best place to… have a friendly natter with your coffee (or a takeaway if you work for Heather & Lay!)
Nourish at St Michael’s
St Michael’s Hotel on the seafront have recently opened Nourish. Coinciding with the arrival of their new head chef, the new menu (launching on 31 May) is based around health and wellbeing. Light salads, juices, smoothies and good clean eating. The Nourish lounge area is vibrant and welcoming with friendly staff (say hello to Phil, perhaps the friendliest person you’ll find working in food and beverage in Falmouth!) Using Cornish tea and coffee beans, the team at St Michael’s believe that our morning beverage is an important part of the morning and a moment to be savoured. Nourish is open to non-residents and offers a fabulous meeting space with lots of sofas and booths to curl up with a notebook or tap away on your laptop - keep an eye out for Jess who oversees our marketing as you’ll usually find her here with her trademark oat milk Mocha.
Best place to… make a day of it with a healthy breakfast - (and perhaps enjoy a session in the spa as well!)
Sabzi
Last but not least is Sabzi. Situated on Arwenack Street, Sabzi has the most magnificent view. Large windows overlooking the water and a wonderful feel, you’ll find exceptional, local coffee from Rising Ground in Wadebridge. The Sabzi beans are exclusive to Sabzi, having their own unique “Duke Street” blend. The milk is from Trink, an organically run, local dairy farm, that offers its herd a free-range life; grazing outside for 270 days a year and only milking once a day, this is what makes the Sabzi team say it’s the best milk they have ever tasted.
Best place to… have a delicious lunch followed by coffee and Kate’s signature Persian Love Cake (bring us some please, they are the best!)
So, there you have it, seven of our favourite places for coffee. It was hard to narrow it down to seven when we have such an abundance of lovely cafes and breakfast spots in Falmouth. Stay tuned for more in our Love Local series of things we love in Falmouth and the surrounding areas.
