Heather & Lay Loves Penryn

Posted: 1st April 2024

We sell a lot of property in Penryn, and we often feel it doesn’t get the love it deserves. So here is a bit about Penryn and why we think it’s so special.

Combining old fashioned charm with a slice of modern artistic magic, Penryn is Cornwall’s oldest town. The Doomsday survey of 1086 records it as a place of considerable importance dating back to Saxon times. However, it was the founding of Glasney College in 1265 that secured Penryn’s significance and established it as a centre of ecclesiastical learning for the next three centuries.

Its location meant Penryn developed as a port and by Tudor times it was the busiest in the south of England as it was both the first and last port of call for ships leaving and coming into the English waters. By the 18thcentury, the port had become a centre for woollen production and there was a commercial centre stretching across the river (still known today as Commercial Road) and now home to lots of independent businesses, cafes, galleries and yoga studios.

Full of historic charm, Penryn Town centre has a beautiful clock tower, original buildings and cobbled streets with lots of steep little hideaways that take you to hidden corners of this traditional town. As you leave Commercial Road, you’ll find a park just off the main strip which in the summer, sat beneath a tree with a book feels like a tranquil escape, or further up Truro Hill you’ll discover Enys – the oldest garden in Cornwall and a hub for festivals and events – you’ll be hard pushed to find a more magical place to meet Father Christmas or hunt for fairies.

And then of course, there’s the other side of Penryn – the bustling student scene, full of creative potential studying at the number one arts university in the UK. The fantastic facilities at Tremough campus draw students from all over the world to hone their creative skills and escape to this Penryn paradise. Combined with the University of Exeter and the Tremough Innovation Centre, Penryn has established itself as a hub for business and academia alike.

When it comes to property in Penryn, there are some incredible areas. Whether you’re looking for a new build like Chandler Park or College Green or something with more character such as Truro Hill or in the heart of Penryn town, you’ll find an array of properties. From townhouses and quaint cottages to modern riverside apartments and new build homes.

But what people don’t tell you about Penryn is the locals. Here you’ll find the friendliest community. From the person who serves you at the local Spar convenience store (meet Carl who draws the best illustrations of birds – ask and he might pen you one), the dynamic duo Jason and Deena at The Post Office where you’ll always be welcomed with a smile and an update on what’s happening in Penryn. To Ruth who runs the renowned café Stargazy Cucina (you won’t find better cakes anywhere) and mother and daughter team Jemma and Daun who run Just Delights – the perfect pit stop for when you need a present.

Friendly locals, a bustling town, a pretty quay and everything you could need on your doorstep – a corner shop, no less than 3 dentists, some incredible pubs and cafes, takeaways, an iconic fish and chip shop and a pizzeria that rivals Naples (talking about the delicious Pizza Pls).
